15 May The PNV demand in Europe measures against the Chinese dumping
MEP Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), Izaskun Bilbao Barandica, participated in a debate about the status of the Asian giant in the World Trade Organization. “Pending the results of public hearings and legal studies about the status of China in the WTO which I hope can be overcome by recognizing the reality that China is not a market economy, emphasized Izaskun Bilbao Barandica. “I want to encourage the Commission to develop more rapid mechanisms to solve the problems we have today with the dumping of Chinese steel. And I want a unanimous response among member states because no one can be saved alone”.
In turn, she appealed to companies in the sector to continue betting and intervening for Europe to turn also resisted the temptations by sustainability and specialization. In this debate she said: “Also I ask to the European steel companies more responsibility and commitment to society based on investment and innovation to gain competitiveness by way of circular economy and sustainability. These are the keys to a strong commitment to its strategic role and its permanence in the European economic fabric”.
Likewise, the vice president of ALDE gave the example of the consequences that is bringing the strategy of the Asian steel industry, “what is happening in the Basque Country, where two plants have already closed in Zumarraga and Sestao and there are hundreds of jobs in game as in many other European regions”.
